Solemnity of Christ the King

The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ will be celebrated on this Sunday 20. Let us see together where this celebration comes from and that celebrates Jesus Christ as Lord of all history and times.
Being Pope has always meant attending many international events, but also celebrate important anniversaries. After his trip to Bahrain and the Mass in St. Peter's for the World Day of the Poor, Pope Francis is ready to celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe on this Sunday, 20 November, in Asti. However, what exactly is the Solemnity of Christ?

In the Catholic Church, the official recognition of Christ's royalty has always been an important issue. It was considered so important that three petitions were presented. All of them requested the establishment of a liturgical feast that would have proclaimed the sovereign rights of Jesus Christ’s royal person and it would have been considered as a remedy to all the outrages that were made against his figure. It was back then, during the Jubilee year of 1925 that Pope Pius XI succeeded, through the encyclical “Quas Primas”, in establishing the feast in honour of Jesus Christ. Originally, it was celebrated on the last Sunday of October, before the Feast of All Saints, but with the new reform of 1969, it was moved to the last Sunday of the Liturgical Year.

In a word, this festivity was born to celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. The same Jesus Christ who affirmed his kingship before Pilate, a kingship that, as Pius XI had recalled in the past, was primarily spiritual and of a kingdom dominated by truth and love.

After this brief historical excursus regarding the Solemnity of Christ, we can only wait and participate to the celebration that will be held this Sunday at the Cathedral of Asti. It will be about a celebration that will end the liturgical year and will prepare us to the Advent. (Cristo Re, identikit della festa che chiude l’anno liturgico)
