The largest bell in the world: more than 3,36 metres high

The bronze bell of Rovereto is the result of a long process of casting bronze from the cannons of all those nations participating in the First World War.
In Rovereto you can visit the church of San Marco, one of the oldest Baroque churches in the city, but you can also admire the largest bell in the world. This bell of big size, known as the Campana dei Caduti, was inaugurated back in 1925. The inauguration was also attended by King of Italy himself, Victor Emmanuel III.

Before the inauguratio, the bronze bell was born in 1924 from an idea of the then priest of Rovereto, Don Antonio Rossaro, who was definitely struck by the heavy losses caused by the First World War. The uniqueness of this bell with its enormous size lies above all on the type of material that was used for its realization: cast bronze from cannons and other weapons which belonged to the different countries that had taken part in the war.

The first version of the bronze bell was placed in the town centre and not on the hill where we find it today. However, Don Rossaro was not satisfied with the sound emitted by the bell and decided to recast it and have a new one created. Only after the fourth casting was the bell considered ready and subsequently placed on the current Miravalle Hill where, since 1965, it has tolled every evening at 9.30 p.m.
