Antonio Gaudi on his way to beatification?
Recently the Catalan architect became venerable. He was devoted to his greatest work to which he spent 15 years of his life: the Sagrada Familia.
On April 14, the Catholic Church declared Antonio Gaudí i Cornet as Venerable. During an audience with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, head of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, Pope Francis authorized the publication of several decrees regarding new saints and blesseds. These include one attesting to heroic virtues and conferring the title of Venerable on the Catalan architect.
In 1998, the archbishop of Barcelona started the canonization process, defining Gaudi as a “lay mystic”. Five years later the documentation was sent to the attention of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.
SAGRADA FAMILIA UNDER CONSTRUCTION FOR 140 YEARS
The “Architect of God,” as so called, took over the construction of the Sagrada Familia back in 1882 and devoted no less than 15 years of his life to it. Since then he devoted himself almost exclusively to the completion of the work. Under his supervision, the church's architecture changed from a neo-Gothic style to Art Nouveau, the latter also known as Catalan modernism. The Sagrada Familia represents a centuries-old work that was never finished and to which entire pages should be devoted. Its majesty perfectly represents the expression of faith and hymn of praise to the Lord. But for this we will have a chance to talk more about it in a future article.
